Fair, and you can check it
Online poker asks you to trust the deal. Poker Rooms lets you check it: every deck is locked before the shuffle, and after each hand your own browser verifies the cards you saw.
How a deal works
- The deck is made and locked. Before anyone has a card, the server makes a secret deck and locks every card with a fingerprint of its own, a SHA-256 hash. The lock on the whole deck is sent to every player before the shuffle.
- Every player adds a seed. Each player's browser picks a random seed and locks it in first, then reveals it. You can type seed words of your own in Settings too.
- The seeds shuffle the locked deck. Everyone's seeds together decide the order of the cards. Because the deck was locked before any seed was known, and the seeds before they were revealed, nobody could pick the order: not the server, not another player.
- The cards are dealt in a fixed order from the shuffled deck.
Checking it yourself
After any hand, tap Verify this deal in Hands. Your browser, not ours, checks the cards you saw against their locks, and checks that your seed was mixed into the shuffle. It shows the working, so you can follow every step.
Once the night is over, every deck opens: the host ending the night, two hours with no hand, or a tournament finishing. Then Verify every hand rebuilds every deck of the night and checks each one, every card included.
Your hands, in the standard format
Every hand is recorded in Open Hand History, the standard format that tracking tools and hand replayers read. Download the night's hands, or one hand, from the Hands tab, with your own cards and the cards everyone saw, all in chips.
